Domaine Denis Mortet Wine: 2000 Gevrey-Chambertin "1er"

Producer: Domaine Denis Mortet (Gevrey-Chambertin)

Comment: (a blend of four lieux-dits, listed in order of size: Les Champonnets, Cherbaudes, Bel Air and Petite Chapelle). Decidedly new world in style with more pinot than obvious Gevrey character, the hallmark of this wine is refinement. It is aromatically very pretty with noticeable oak spice and dark pinot fruits followed by full, supple, rich flavors supported by a ripe and rounded tannic structure. Balanced and already approachable, this is an especially nice effort that should drink well over the medium term and while a few more years in the cellar should see an increase in complexity, it is by no means infanticide to enjoy it now. It is important to point out that this wine is not an exemplar of Gevrey terroir but it certainly satisfying and will go well with moderately robust dishes and is an ideal accompaniment to tuna and salmon. In short, if you take pleasure in new world style Burgundy, then the 2000 Mortet "1er" is both elegant and exceptionally well done in its genre. 88/2005-10

Prices shown are estimated retail in the U.S., but prices do of course vary widely depending on the retailer.
